Finding your Collie

You have done your research and decided a Collie Smooth or Collie Rough puppy will fit with your lifestyle. The next step is finding your Collie.

The best person to purchase a Collie puppy from is a Registered Breeder, (registered with a state Member Body of Dogs Australia (the Australian National Kennel Council) such as Dogs Victoria, Dogs NSW, etc.)

Registered Breeders have completed training and are passionate about their breed. They carefully plan their breeding programs for health, temperament, and conformity to the Breed Standard (a document that lays out the best attributes to strive for in the breed). There are also breeding guidelines Registered Breeders must comply with.

Purchasing a Collie Puppy won’t happen overnight, but a moderate wait for a member of the family who will be with you for the next ten to fourteen years, is worth planning for.

There are two main avenues to finding your Collie Puppy:

  1. Contact Registered Breeders

Registered Breeders will maintain an Enquiry List of people interested in purchasing a puppy. They will contact you once they have puppies available or are expecting a litter.

Puppy Price

You may be surprised to learn the purchasing price for a pure-bred Collie puppy with a traceable pedigree, health checks, vaccinations, puppy pack and support from the breeder for the lifespan of your puppy, is comparable and in many cases less than the price of a mixed breed dog.

Purchasing an Older Dog

If you decide that an older or more mature Collie dog would be more suitable for your lifestyle, you can find listing of available dogs at:

More about Registered Breeders

A Registered Breeder has studied the breed and proven the quality of his or her breeding stock through both conformation shows and careful breeding programs.

When you purchase a puppy from a Registered Breeder they will be:

  • Vet checked
  • Microchipped
  • Wormed
  • Vaccinated
  • Health checked (including an eye examination)
  • Registered with Dogs Victoria (Limited or Full Registration) (includes the puppy’s pedigree)
  • And come with a Puppy Pack, that can include samples of food puppy has been eating and information about his/her ongoing care.

A Registered Breeder will be available to help you throughout the puppy’s lifetime should any problems or questions arise.

Most Registered Collie Breeders are breed enthusiasts and not animal businesses operating for profit. They breed for the love, future, and betterment of the Collie breed.
